Size of Hostas in our Catalogue
The mature size of an individual hosta will depend very much on growing conditions and it is not uncommon to find different catalogues varying in their estimates by as much as 50%! So what follows should be taken as a very rough guide only.

Most purchasers of hostas are interested in the mature height of a plant since this helps to place it in the garden border or bed. The spread of a hosta is, perhaps, less important since a clump which grows too large can easily be split. We have given the following guide to the mature height of a clump based largely on the scheme used by the American Hosta Society and most retailers.

Dwarf – This designation has been discontinued by the American Hosta Society and all hostas previously listed in our catalogue as dwarf have been changed to ‘miniature’.

Miniature – Height: normally 6” or less. In March 2010, the American Hosta Society changed it’s way of measuring miniature hostas from one based on height to a new classification based on leaf size ( Leaf blade area no greater than about 6.0 square inches (38.7 square cm.)). This means that some small leaved hostas over 6” in height are now included as miniatures, e.g. H. Stiletto. These are now listed as miniatures in our catalogue.

Small – Height: 6" to 10".

Medium – Height: 10" to 18".

Large – Height: 18" to 28".

Giant – Height: More than 28".

Each entry now lists the breeder or originator of each variety together with the date of registration with the American Hosta Society. . NR after an entry means ‘Not registered’.
